Writing is a magical process.

Words create images and tell stories. They give shape to our inmost thoughts and feelings, giving them structure and bringing them out into the open. Writing is also an act of power that can change the world, one sentence at a time.

But as Harry Potter and his friends discovered during their time at Hogwarts, magic is not easy. It takes practice and discipline. It requires craft as well as artistry. The most beautiful, mystical magic won’t hold up without the necessary nuts-and-bolts

 In this 5-week class, we’ll focus on the nuts-and-bolts every writer needs to create powerful pieces of writing:

  • Nouns and verbs

  • Adjectives, adverbs, metaphors, and similes

  • Sentences and paragraph

  • Self-editing (revision)

  • Time-management

Whether your goal is to write a novel, a children’s book, a memoir, an essay or article, or a nonfiction book, you’ll need these basic elements.

We’ll be talking about strong and weak words, about clauses and commas, structure and organization, rhythm and cadence. These nuts-and-bolts may not seem as magical as a good story idea or a life-changing truth—but without these practical elements of writing spellcraft, even the loveliest and strongest stories or ideas fall flat.

 Spend a day with Brigid . . .
and rekindle your creativity.

 As human beings, creativity is our birthright—and yet we all have times when we feel dulled, stifled, or diminished by the darkness of the world. We feel unproductive, unable to connect to a source of inspiration that would bring fire and fruitfulness to our barren lives.

Brigid, known as both saint and goddess, offers us that connection. In her triple forms of seer, midwife, and smith, she brings the blessings of creative inspiration, birth, and craft.

 In this day-long workshop, as we learn about Brigid as saint and goddess, we will focus on writing as a creative practice. Using Brigid as our template, we will:

  • discover new doorways to inspiration;

  • nurture new ideas and bring them to birth;

  • be empowered to forge works of truth and creative force;

  • and live by the light of the Divine Flame of creativity and inspiration.

WRITING AS A CREATIVE PRACTICE

Soul Writing Workshop

(with Carol’s Coffee and Muffins on the Side)

When: Tuesdays at 1:30–3:30; Nov. 5, 12, 19, and Dec. 3, 10
Where: Carol’s Coffee & Art Bar, 177 Front Street, Owego, NY
Cost: $150 (includes a complimentary muffin and coffee at each of the 5 sessions)

Writing can be a creative practice that opens the doorway to your Soul.

Your body cannot live without breathing—and your Soul cannot live without expressing itself. Creativity, in whatever form it takes, is the Soul’s exhalation, the natural outcome of inspiration (inhalation). And just as meditation is an ancient practice that can deepen your relationship with your body, allowing your breath to become a bridge to the Sacred, so writing is an ancient practice that can create a bridge to the Divine, while deepening your connection with your own Soul.

Meditation practice teaches us to be more aware of our entire body, even while it opens and relaxes our mind—and an ongoing writing practice asks us to step out of our comfort zones and routines, and open ourselves to the Mystery that is all around us.

 In this class, we won’t be focusing on the mechanics of writing but on the act of creation itself. Each of the 5 weeks will address a different aspect of the creative practice of writing.

  • We’ll learn new ways to hear the call to write.

  • We’ll recognize and face the obstacles that prevent us from writing.

  • We’ll learn about the power of our own creativity to shape the world.

  • We’ll shape new habits that will allow more room for our writing practice.

  • And finally, we’ll celebrate and affirm the ongoing cycle of Creation that flows through our writing practice.
